What does it mean to flourish?

​

Flourishing describes a state in which we are living with vigor and strength. It is more than being happy and is deeper than just being physically fit. It can’t be evaluated with measurements such as blood pressure, cholesterol, or triglyceride levels. Although being happy, fit, and healthy is critical to wellbeing, flourishing is the subjective experience of thriving, a sense that one is living a life of intention that cultivates the best of who we can be. Flourishing can happen at any point in life. It starts when we make choices that not only keep us healthy, but are aligned with the values and needs that are important to us.

Does it seem that flourishing is a state only for a chosen few? Research has shown that it is much more attainable than we may think. Studies have identified three qualities shared by people who report high levels of life satisfaction and wellbeing: stability, adaptability, and resilience. It seems that people who thrive have a strong sense of direction and purpose in their lives. This helps to direct and stabilize their energy. They are also more skilled at adapting to unforeseen circumstances and are able to work around setbacks and roadblocks. When life presents obstacles, those who are flourishing find ways to grow from these challenges, viewing adversity as an inevitable part of life that makes one stronger.

Why “White Pine”?

The Eastern White Pine, one of the oldest trees in North America with a lifespan of 500 years, exemplifies the qualities associated with wellbeing. It is an incredibly stable tree that grows to great heights, making it one of the tallest trees in North America. With a strong trunk that grows straight, regardless of exposure to high winds, and long branches with feathery needles that create a massive canopy, a stand of Eastern White Pine makes for an excellent wind break and protection from the elements. It is an adaptable tree, growing with all plant species, in a variety of soils as well as different climates. The Eastern White Pine is a fine example of resilience: it can grow on the side of a cliff on the cool, damp rocky coast of Maine just as easily as in a hot and humid field in the dense soil of a Georgia farm.
